It is the next stage in Ireland’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, building on the extensive enterprise and labour supports already deployed.

COVID-19 has had an enormous impact on communities, businesses, families and individuals across the country. The absolute priority of the Government is the wellbeing of our people and communities. COVID-19 remains major challenge for us all. We must continue to be guided by public health advice. This advice will remain to the fore as we reopen our economy and continue our recovery path.

Now is the right time to start on the path to a jobs-led sustainable recovery. The Jobs Stimulus will build economic confidence, within public health constraints, and deliver immediate effective supports to get people back to work.

An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar said
This has been a time of enormous stress and strain for employers and their staff. We’ve already pumped billions of euro into the economy through wage subsidies, the PUP, cash for businesses, low cost loans and commercial rates waivers. We know these actions have made a difference. We’ve made enormous progress on supressing the virus, and significant progress too on restarting our economy. More than 280,000 people have already got back to work.

Repairing the damage wrought on the economy – and keeping the virus contained – is vital for the wellbeing of our people. The stimulus package is the next step in our national recovery story. It is designed to help businesses which haven’t reopened yet and those struggling to do so. We have listened to businesses and responded with a package of scale and speed to meet their most immediate needs. Our main objective is to save jobs and create new ones.

We will do this by supporting viable businesses and jobs, including new hires, through an extended wage subsidy scheme; giving companies extra assistance to reopen and stay open through a higher Restart grant which is available to more firms and providing more and cheaper loan finance. We will also continue to prepare for Brexit; exploit opportunities in areas like Life Sciences and invest in decarbonisation and digitalisation; and make targeted temporary tax reductions that will help retail businesses, hospitality and the housing construction sector.
